Illustrator is a powerful design tool, and saving files from the design platform to a PES format will make that file compatible for embroidery machines. The PES format works with both small-scale embroidery machines and large, multi-needle commercial machines. It is the standard for nearly every embroidery application. The overall vector to embroidery file process is relatively simple to execute.
Embroidery Software Platform
Several embroidery software platforms exist, but Brother software is the gold standard. The software takes the design and communicates each element to the needles working to create the pattern.
The Brother software will not read and translate files, unless they are saved in the PES format. Luckily, saving or converting Illustrator files to this format is easy. However, keep the embroidery purposing in mind during the design process. Illustrator has the power to create extremely comply designs that may not mesh well with an embroidery machine.
Focus on design elements that have contrast and patterns that will look great after leaving the embroidery machine. Although extremely detailed designs are possible, they require a multi-needle machine to manage the intensive colors and thread placements.
Free PES Converter Options
You can manually convert the file within the Brother software platform, but free converter programs are also available. Do a quick web search to generate multiple free file converter options. Focus on one that is both free and entirely web based. There is no need to pay or download any software for the process.
Many file format converters do not offer PES format conversions, but a few have the capability. ConvertIO is one of several that work well. Simply save your Illustrator file. Open the file in the converter program, select the PES format and click convert. It will generate a new file that is ready for embroidery.
Save this file and test it by opening the file in your Brother software program. The image should open without any issues. You will still need to adjust the coloring, scale and other properties specific to the embroidery process and style. The image however should open and function as a normal PES file within the program.
Manual Converting to PES Format
Manually converting is the best option to ensure everything converts and saves properly. Save the Illustrator file in the EPS format. When you click Save As, simply click the drop down to choose the format option.
Open your Brother software program by clicking PE Design with the version you have installed. This process works across all current versions. Click on Layout and Editing to trigger a new window. This is where you normally setup a project.
Click on Image and search for the EPS file you saved previously. Double click or click OK to open the file. Under the Stitching Method label, choose Select Stitching Method from Image. Choose the Auto Punch stitching method and click Next to continue. You can always change the stitching method when ready to begin. For now, this option is fine to simply convert the file format.
The next menu has settings for colors and various thresholds specific to the embroidery process. You can choose to modify the settings if desired or simply move forward to convert the format. Simply click finish to setup the image.
Lastly, click Save As and choose PES file format option. Click Save to finish the conversion.

Other possible reasons why your .PES file does not want to open
In addition to the problem described above, i.e. the lack of the appropriate application to support the .PES file, there may be several reasons that cause problems with opening and operation of the data format:
1. Incorrect version of the installed application
A quite common problem is the lack of application in the appropriate version. Even if you have an application, with the help of which you should open the .PES file, you may have a problem with it because of its version. Perhaps in previous versions the application has not yet supported the .PES file, so download the update and check again.
2. Incorrect .PES file association with the program
If you have already installed the appropriate application, and it is the correct version, the file may not open correctly, because the operating system does not have information that this program supports the file. So you need to 'show' which program the computer should use. To do this:
- Right-click the .PES file
- Go to the 'Open with' - then 'Choose default program ...'
- Locate the appropriate application
- Click 'OK'
3. The file is corrupt
It also happens that the file you want to open is corrupt and therefore there is no such possibility. In this situation, you should find its different version, or ask a person from whom you got, to send it again.
